The Walker (Trevor Artori)
This elusive character is more of a myth than a real thing when first introduced in the title – his presence is entirely superstition to all the supporting cast around the main character until they spot someone matching the description walking in the barrens, amongst the Awakened. Until late in the game he is merely a shape in the distance, elusive and evasive, it’s not until late in the title that you discover his true identity. He was once the brother of Christov, Trevor Artori – his face is stretched and aged, his hair is graying and his body is well built, hidden beneath layers of clothing – he becomes to the player the only known person to have come back from being Awakened – to return to normal human life. It’s the explanation for why the Awakened do not attack him as he moves about their home.
The Walker – Trevor – teaches the player about the origination of the Awakened for what really happened. He teaches the player how he managed to revert back to his normal state and urges the story towards its climax, eventually being discovered as a betrayer to the player and potentially destroying what is left of mankind.
Colonel Drake
The Colonel, Drake, is a self appointed leader of one of the Utopia’s defense forces. Paranoid, delusional, and insane pretty much sum up this man’s drive and motivation. He’s a 6’1 monster that bears down on his troops relentlessly, driving them to unbelievable levels of exhaustion and moral fatigue. It’s unfortunate, but the man seems to have been touched a bit too much by the True Awakening, bringing out a sense of a jittery lack of confidence that he will survive each day. He proves to be about as useful as shooting yourself in the foot before a marathon and is extremely skeptical of the stability of the Player and their party. He claims to be doing everything for the betterment of the people in the Utopia, but at the slightest outburst of emotion he will arrest someone and send them into a prison for days. Most people do not talk about him on the street, and his men respect him from a sense of fear.
Drake interacts poorly with the player – he is entirely unreceptive to the presence of the Project Awakening personnel in “his” city and gives them hell every chance he gets. Eventually, the player will have to decide how to end Drakes command – peacefully, or forcefully.
The Awakened
A variety of creatures encompassed into one general category, the Awakened are once humans, of all different shapes and sizes, which have shifted into their most suppressed emotion. Some of these people will be hulking brutes, others will be sneaky monsters, climbing walls and shifting from shadows to shadows. Some will be brutally self-tortured, while others will be cackling loonies. The variety of methods and degrees to bring out these various emotions are rather countless and could inspire a number of conceptual designs. Most importantly, however, is the fact that there is no limit to who was changed – children, men and women; racial barriers entirely aside, everyone was affected by the True Awakening. These people just managed to survive at the top of the proverbial food chain.
The awakened provide the main source of danger for the player. Their role is purely specified to what type of emotion they “gave in” to. Some shall be fear generators, climbing walls, heads backwards – while others will be simply rush out of the shadows and claw at you style creatures – others still will be tactical, pain loving beasts that use firearms and take a lot of lead to bring down.
The Betrayed
Born of Project Awakening, these “super” enemies are numbered only at a few but their capabilities are well beyond the scope of the Awakened. Once survivors from the True Awakening, these subjects of Project Awakening escaped in the early testing phases and mutated into half-creatures, partially Awakened and partially not. They retain a great deal of their sentience, capable of coordinating and calculating much like a normal being – a level of intelligence that seems to have escaped The Awakened. However, they are also capable of controlling the Awakened, summoning them to places and coordinating assaults against locations. After their escape from Project Awakening, they branched out to many various locations across the world, able to use the World Bridge without fear of the Awakened stopping them. Slowly they discover that the Project Awakening was continued, and has proven a success, and they begin to work towards foiling the efforts of the player and his party. Not all that they seem though, it is later discovered that the betrayed may not have been “willing” subjects to Project Awakening.
Betrayed are visibly designated by the half morphed forms that they bear. Part human and part not, they are all insane, and each has plans of their own to destroy what’s left of mankind. Though there are only a few of the Betrayed out there, their power is undeniable, and their ability to control the Awakened is dangerous enough to warrant going after them. It’s believed most subjects have the ability to shift between at least two different sets of emotions to fuel their powers.
