Christov Artori

Christov is the head of Project: Awakening. Under his direction, several young and physically fit candidates were selected and trained in the old ways of combat and tactics before they were turned over to begin their efforts with harnessing the power that ExO can provide – the power that turned most the worlds population into a nightmare. Now, bits and pieces of the old world must be collected in order to rebuild the history, formula and understanding of ExO and piece together a solution to this terrifying problem.

At about 5’8”, Christov is the sort of man that you would expect little from and give everything to. He’s hard, determined, and brilliant. Christov holds a general intelligence that is almost tangible when he talks to the other characters – his primary knowledge of military tactics, martial arts and other studies make him a valuable ally, but clearly he was not limited to only this field of study in his life and, had things gone differently, he would have been one of the greatest minds the world had ever known. Now, he will be lucky to survive each day, like everyone else – though he stands a far better chance than most. Christov has darker skin and a small frame that perhaps betray the role he plays in the title. While he begins rather closed to the player, he bears a tragic story of working hard to organize friends when the True Awakening began, and losing most of them before his own eyes over the years.

Perhaps Christov’s greatest asset is not his knowledge, but his presence. People follow the man because of his steady attitude and his fearlessness in these dark times. Though he no longer uses ExO, Christov rarely has emotional outbursts of any sort and makes it very clear, early on, that he plans to do all he can to help everyone survive. Christov will often be found writing in books that he is self-authoring, a way of passing his knowledge on should it be lost to most people. He does not seem to mind idle conversation, and is passionate about the topics he is most familiar with, but he does get rather touchy when anyone asks about his personal life or history.

Erik Pelsner

Erik is the perfect example of the wrong man for the job – until he starts working it. One of the few survivors of Project Awakening, Erik, like the player, is able to use his emotional outbursts against his enemies. He is a small 5’6, pasty white nerdy kind of character with a slight case of schizophrenia that causes him to have random instances of symptoms for the disease. The reason for this remains uncertain until late in the game when more about the characters past is revealed through a meeting at one of the remaining utopias in the world. When Eric enters combat he uses his fury power to become a hulking 7-8’ tall creature ripped wide with muscles. This causes him to primarily wear light armors that afford him plenty of space to expand and contract in, as the thicker mass and skin he attains when in his Fury form permits him additional damage protection. Strangely, Erik never has an episode while in his Fury form.

Erik provides the player with direction through basic commentary. He is a good source of information for understanding the transformations that take place when the player uses their powers, and provides the character with insight about Fury’s that they meet in the mission areas.

Alyssa Erimov

Another of the survivors from Project Awakening, Alyssa specializes in stealth, tech, and fear – Her abilities make this slim and athletically built woman capable of delving in the shadows and brief bursts of teleportation to get behind her enemies. Yet her attitude is entirely contrary to her talents – she is open, outgoing, and pleasantly voiced. Young, at merely 18 years of age, she is practically a child compared to most the other Project Awakening team members, but she scares them often and is not afraid to use her powers outside of the field, despite the cautions and reprimands that such action draws. Alyssa prefers to use small weapons and strike quickly and frequently – her past is an open book – born and raised in one of the Utopia’s prior to the True Awakening, she never showed as much of an effect as others did during the outbreak. Both her parents died and she made the choice to submit to the Project at Christov’s behest, when the man was traveling through looking for candidates.

Alyssa provides the character with major insight into Fear’s in the field. In addition, she provides a sense of compassionate companionship for the character. I am, as yet, uncertain if a love interest can brew there, or if I would prefer to let Alyssa and Erik become close over the course of the story.

Professor Anuwy Mortensin

The professor is the head of Project Awakening, an older African scientist that has tried for years to successfully develop a method of combating the Awakening. Project Awakening – the bestowing of control to certain individuals of the power behind their emotions – is his pride and joy at this stage of his life, and all he thinks of, dreams of, sleeps considering, is how to better the Project, how to make it more effective, and how to make it more widespread. He actively attempts to aid the player in discovering a cure for the True Awakening but has had, as yet, no success. Still, it does little to sway the man to stop from his actions, and he works diligently every time the player encounters him, using new information to find a cure. His hair is gray and his skin is wrinkled, revealing his age – yet his sporty white lab coat and black pants ensemble make him a welcomed sight, and he always seems in good spirits.

The player will interact frequently with Professor Anuwy. He provides them with information about their missions, requests their aid in his study, and frequently provides them useful tips on how to better use their powers. He has spent a lot of time studying and preparing for Project Awakenings fruition and will do all he can, it seems, to see it work.

Devin Corvaid

A new member for Project: Awakening that joins up later in the game, Devin lived in one of the smaller hovels outside of the utopia, within the dangerous barrens. He proves very resourceful and determined to impress when he is first encountered. Young, at a mere 15 years of age, Devin focuses on a strange sort of emotion: Pride. Optimistic at most every vantage, Pride enables Devin to say precisely the right things to help the group along at all the right times – in and out of combat. His defensive abilities increase against The Awakened, while his offensive abilities become focused on aiding the other party members in their tasks. While Devin may focus on this emotion for the abilities that he bears, he often becomes more depressed and uncertain than usual when he releases their use, showing perhaps a superficial barrier that he has carried with him for many years.

Devin acts as a major support character for the player. He introduces a new ability that the player can branch off into and he has a sense of loyalty that is difficult to turn away.
